We love our buffets in this country. It seems the most popular restaurants, at least in this region of the South, are those who pile it high with more food than any two humans should consume. At the top of the "pile it high" list are the buffets. What makes these particular eateries so appealing is their ability to allow their patrons to pick and choose, in no particular order, which delicacies one consumes. At the buffet you can skip the salad and go straight for the entree. You can also avoid the meatier products and head straight to the chocolate. The buffet is a smorgasbord of personal preference, catering more to our taste than our needs.
Actually, this blog is about faith, not food. I am finding that the Christian community is spending increasing amounts of time in the spiritual buffets, bypassing the balanced, healthy portions of biblical truth and theology. We meander into our Christian bookstores looking for a tasty morsel of self-help. We tune to radio stations which are long on popularity but short on truth or musicality. If something does not satiate our spiritual craving we mosey over to another part of the buffet. However, the only food that will truly satisfy the longing of our spirit is intimacy with the Almighty found through knowing Him completely. This cannot be accomplished one nibble at a time.
So join me as we embark on a new spiritual diet. We may have to leave the buffet for a few weeks but it will be worth the effort. The end result is described in Hebrews 5:14, "But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil." May we together become healthy, happy, and holy.
